Research 1994-1997
Research funded by the UK DFID Forestry Research Programme was
undertaken to develop a technique of producing sequences of illustrations
to convey simple agroforestry practices to illiterate women farmers.
Field work was based in The Gambia, West Africa to develop the
techniques and produce a manual for local women farmers (Project
Manual)
The research draws on local expertise and on the wider information
available on illustration for development. However, the need for
a cheap form of reproduction and the inability to rely on a text
for explanation presents additional problems and possible solutions
to these problems need to be carefully tested.
Agroforestry was chosen as a starting point for this work. However,
many other subjects can be developed as manuals using this technique
as is clear from the range of manuals currently being developed
by organisations in Africa (African Manuals).
Some of the main findings of the initial research are presented
