Task Mapping

This is a participatory exercise involving field staff and target group who explore the actions involved in the task and convey this as a series of notes or thumbnail sketches that depict the scene. The process enables staff and farmers to develop a better understanding of the how the task would be carried out locally. It also helps to break down the pre-conceived notions of "the outside expert" that often prohibits the tailoring of activities to meet local conditions or may lead to the adoption of inappropriate activities. It is a useful tool for:
  • identifying which of a group of possible skills training exercises are the most interesting and appropriate to the target group
  • building good relations between field staff and local groups
